Initiated in the Africa region in 1979 with the founding of the Special Olympics Kenya, Special Olympics Africa today comprises 21 accredited programs in Southern, Eastern, Central, West Africa and Indian Ocean countries and currently accounts for nearly 120,000 athletes.
Special Olympics provides a platform for African nations to address the needs of over 20 million African people with an intellectual disability in the areas of sport, health, education and leadership.  Additionally, Special Olympics contributes significantly in addressing the correlation between disability and poverty, a key issue that permeates the continent.
